How could you contribute to LA21?
If you are passionate about local environment and sustainability issues, and have a small amount of time to give on evenings or weekends, we would love you to join us. We are also keen to collaborate with other community groups and organisations to further the development of Woking as a low footprint community. To join LA21 or get on the email newsletter list contact us here: wokingla21@yahoo.co.uk
LA21 Steering Group meets quarterly to oversee and progress Woking LA21 strategy, and discuss any local issues that are relevant. Woking Borough Council provides administrative support and meeting rooms. The Steering Group and LA21 Chair are elected each year at the Annual General Meeting.
The feedback mechanism to Woking Borough Council has three arms. LA21 Steering Group representatives, Borough Councillors representing the three main political parties, and Woking Borough Council Officers meet quarterly at the LA21 Liaison Group. In addition, we have a permanent member on Woking Borough Council’s Climate Change Working Group, who inputs to the development and implementation of WBC’s climate change strategy. Woking LA21 is also a linked partner to the Local Strategic Partnership, which enables two-way communications with a range of local organisations and agencies.
LA21 Project Groups develop projects aimed at reducing Woking’s footprint and educating for low impact living. Recent projects have included the development of a Woking-based Internet carbon footprint calculator, and a loan bank of energy meters, both of which seek to prime the community with practical information about how to reduce their footprint. Previous projects have created two publications, Green Pages and Greener Homes, which bring together a great deal of useful information on sustainable living. The ongoing and very successful Gardening For Life project continues to engage Woking community with better gardening practice, and how it relates to low impact living. And we ran a very succesful community conference earlier in 2009. As well as helping run LA21´s regular public meetings, members of the project groups also participate in many other public events where sustainability is a key theme.
We currently have eight project groups which are developing projects for the future. If you are interested in becoming part of the solution, and joining this group at a very exciting junction in its evolution then have a look here or at our sister site here and contact the appropriate project leader to join up.
